HISTORY OF MEDICINE IN THE WESTERN WORLD
TRACING THE LEGACY OF HIPPOCRATES OF COS
AND THE CNIDIAN SCHOOL.

The history of medicine in the West, can be traced
back to ancient Greece, and the famous physician,
Hippocrates of Cos. But, there was a competing
school, that being the Cnidian school. One of the major differences was that the Cnidian school held that disease afflicts the body from the outside inward, like a descending demon that takes over and makes you sick. The followers of Hippocrates held that illness came from inside out, i.e. that the body failed to control things like infections, and that failure occurred first before there were symptoms.

The difference in belief radically changed their approach to the patient, and their view of the doctor's role in care. The Cnidians felt the patient was like a passive battleground on which the doctor's efforts and the Disease met and fought.

The followers of Hippocrates said no, that the patient should be the main actor and the doctor had only a supporting role, offering advice and perhaps treatments meant to remove impediments to healing.

Chiropractic, and the Unani medical tradition, follow more closely in the tradition of Hippocrates, but the Allopaths, the Medical Doctors (MDs) follow the philosophy of the Cnidians. The MDs USED to take the Hippocratic Oath on medical school graduation. Many no longer do that, and the ones that do, are reciting a much different Hippocratic Oath than the one originally given by Hippocrates. The Medical Establishment changed the wording and took out parts they didn't agree with.
